Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron

Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron is a unique telling of what happened after Cinderella married Prince Charming. 200 years later, girls between the ages of sixteen and eighteen are required to attend the annual ball to impress eligible men and win their hand in marriage. If they fail, the girls not chosen are considered forfeit and are never seen or heard from again.

This night brings fear, and sometimes dread, for all the girls throughout the kingdom, but especially Sophia who is only interested in marrying her childhood best friend Erin. Making the life-altering decision to flee during the ball, Sophia finds herself discovering and hiding in Cinderella's mausoleum where she meets the last living descendant of Cinderella and her step sisters, Constance.

Setting off on an adventure to overthrow the king, Sophia learns the true story of what really happened 200 years ago and discovers it was not the fairytale everyone has been fooled into believing. This is the story of girls who are tired of being treated like property and are willing to risk everything to change the rules while also discovering themselves along the way.

This book has a wonderful concept. After reading the synopsis, I was immediately in awe and ready to dive in. The book had a strong start and I was absorbed after the first few pages. As the story progressed, the writing got rushed and read more like a children's book than a YA novel. I think this book could've easily been made into a duopoly or even a trilogy. With that being said, this is the author's first published book so there is plenty of time for her to develop and experiment with her writing style. I will be reading her next book This Poison Heart set to be released on June 29, 2021.
